Biographical/Historical note

The Department of Student Life at Utah Valley University engages students socially, encourages civic involvement, and provides opportunities for experiential learning, leadership, and wellness through collaboration with the campus and community. In 2004 UVSC Student Council VP Joe Vogel invited Michael Moore to address the college community on behalf of the student body. Michael Moore is the Oscar and Emmy-winning director films Roger & Me, Bowling for Columbine, and Fahrenheit 9/11; and author of Dude Where's My Country? and Stupid White Men. Moore's work is politically liberal and critical of the Republican Party and other conservative ideals. This invitation caused great controversy in the student body and local (Orem, Utah) community which spawned a lawsuit against the UVSC Student Council and faculty representative Phil Clegg. The Student Council also invited conservative talk radio personality and Fox News host Sean Hannity to speak as a counterbalance to Moore's visit.
