Scope and Contents note

Collection includes materials relating to the election, inauguration and assassination of John F. Kennedy and the 1964 election and early presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson. Notable items in the collection are several personalized autographs from Kennedy family members and Lyndon B. Johnson from the 1961 inauguration of John F. Kennedy, newspapers from the Dallas area for the weekend of Kennedy's assassination, and an invitation to an event hosted by President Lyndon B. Johnson. Material types comprise newspapers, newspaper clippings, periodicals, magazines, correspondence, placards, election memorabilia, invitations, autographs, posters, vinyl disc, and realia.

Biographical/Historical note

In January 1961 John F. Kennedy was inaugurated as the 35th President of the United States of America. On November 22, 1963 Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. He was immediately succeeded by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson.

Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in as the 36th President of the United States by Judge Sarah T. Hughes on Air Force One at Love Field in Dallas prior to returning to Washington D.C. He was flanked by his wife and Jackie Kennedy. In 1964 Lyndon B. Johnson won the Presidential election with Hubert Humphrey becoming his Vice President.
